The Edo State Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Office recently held a strategy-focused
meeting with members of the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) to explore
collaborative pathways in advancing key SDG targets across the state.
During the meeting, the Director-General, Hon. Julius Ogieva-Okunbor, welcomed the YALI
delegation warmly and reaffirmed the office’s mission of “leaving no one behind.” He
emphasized the SDG pillars People, Planet, Peace, and Prosperity, urging all partners to
center these values in their work.
YALI presented a range of impactful initiatives, including:
● Celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28)
● Medical outreaches in underserved markets
● An upcoming Eye Outreach program
● Plastic Recycling Incentive Projects with financial rewards
● Formation of university-based SDG clubs
● Cleaner environment campaigns and proposed partnerships with radio and telecoms
to amplify awareness
The group also advocated for long-term waste disposal systems, youth internships with SDGs,
and collaboration with institutions like ITF, MTN, GLO, and civil society groups such as
CONGOS.



In response, the DG expressed enthusiasm about partnering with YALI and provided insights
into current SDG projects, which include:
● Toilet and borehole construction in local markets
● Advocacy for Goal 3 (Health) and Goal 6 (Water and Sanitation)● Plans to collaborate with the Governor, the Ministry of Environment, and local authorities
to improve sanitation and waste management systems
The meeting ended on a high note, with both parties aligned in their mission to empower
communities, amplify youth participation, and drive sustainable development in Edo State
through innovative, inclusive, and collaborative strategies.

With the bold leadership of Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo and the strategic direction of
the Director General (SDGs Focal Person) Hon. Julius Ogieva-Okunbor, organizations like
YALI are joining forces with the SDGs Office to shape impactful initiatives, from health outreach
to environmental advocacy and youth innovation.
